How to Shine Up Your Jewellery for Summer
When the sun is shining, you can't beat a glint of light bouncing off a piece of jewellery. But everyday wear and tear often dulls our jewellery’s shine. If you’d love to give your jewellery some much-needed sparkle again, here’s how your local jeweller in Ilford can help you shine up for summer.
How to Clean Gold Jewellery
Whilst pure gold doesn’t tarnish like silver, it can develop a dull film over it from the build-up of lotions, soaps and the oils from your skin. Gold alloys, such as those mixed with copper, silver or nickel can also tarnish or smudge. But the good news is, it’s easy to keep gold looking its shiny best.
For a mild clean, all you need to do is mix a little washing up liquid in a bowl of warm water and soak your jewellery briefly before giving it a gentle scrub with a soft toothbrush or an eyebrow brush, before rinsing and patting dry with a chamois cloth. For a stronger clean, you can use equal parts cold water and ammonia (be careful to use goggles, a mask and gloves to protect your eyes, throat and skin!) or a commercial jewellery cleaning solution, to soak the jewellery in before scrubbing, rinsing and drying.
However, if you’d rather leave your gold jewellery to the professionals, that’s fine too. This is by far the safest method of cleaning your gold jewellery. Take your jewellery to a jeweller in Ilford who specialises in jewellery repairs and cleaning on the premises. That way, you know that your gold jewellery will be cleaned on site with no risk of being lost in transit.
How to Revive White Gold Jewellery
White gold is popular because of its beautiful silver shine. It’s a great alternative to silver simply because of its shine. But it is a completely different kettle of fish to yellow gold when it comes to replenishing its shine.
If you want your white gold jewellery to catch the sun this summer, you will need to have the rhodium plating replaced. White gold is yellow gold which has been alloyed with a silvery metal, such as palladium, and then plated with rhodium to create the silver colour. It is this rhodium plating that needs to be replaced to recapture its shine.
For rhodium plating Ilford customers can bring their pieces to our Hainault shop. We’ll replace the rhodium plating on the premises by dipping your white gold jewellery to give it back its silver shine.
How to Shine-Up Silver Jewellery
Whilst a favourite for the majority of jewellery wearers, silver is a metal which scratches and tarnishes easily. However, it is easy to clean. A 100% cotton or flannel cloth can be used to buff some of the tarnishing away, or you can purchase a speciality silver cloth and polish to use instead.
However, you do need to be careful that the cloth you use doesn’t scratch the silver jewellery, as it is a very soft metal. Furthermore, if the silver has tarnished too much, you may be best having the piece professionally cleaned. Jewellers Hainault and Ilford wide will be able to professionally polish your silver jewellery to rid it of tarnish and give it back its shine ready for summer.
How to Replenish Platinum Jewellery
Platinum jewellery can be cleaned in much the same way as gold jewellery, with a mild soap and water solution or with ammonia, but once again we’d always advise a professional clean if possible.
This is especially the case with platinum jewellery as it is often used for rings, and ammonia can damage soft gemstones. Therefore, take your platinum jewellery to a professional jeweller in Ilford and let them bring the shine back this summer.
